Arts Bring Inspiration and History to ThriveOn King

From the very beginning, neighborhood residents made it clear that art must be at the heart of the ThriveOn King project.

Their vision ensured that creativity would not only be included, but meaningfully integrated into this new community space. Today, that vision has come to life in stunning, inspiring ways.

The Call for Art

Art began taking center stage at ThriveOn King in 2022, when the Collaboration hosted three intensive visioning sessions for residents and an information session for artists. In 2023, the Collaboration issued a formal call for art, seeking engagement with artists who have strong Milwaukee ties and a deep understanding of the Bronzeville community fabric.

Inspiring Artists

Next, an art review committee comprised of talented community members of diverse ages and arts backgrounds partnered with the Collaboration’s art project team to assess the many proposals received. Ultimately, ThriveOn King commissioned and purchased artwork from more than 20 acclaimed and homegrown artists that reflects the values and priorities of the community:

  • Respecting and preserving the culture and history of Bronzeville
  • Honoring the vitality and community connections present today
  • Celebrating youth and the promise of a thriving future
